Nigel Farage reported to UK standards watchdog over bank meeting

A Labour MP has asked the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards to investigate Nigel Farage's reported contact with the Bank of England regarding its digital pound plans. The complaint links the matter to political donations from a major Tether investor to Reform UK. No findings of wrongdoing have been made.

Labour MP Phil Brickell filed the request on July 2 after reports that Farage challenged Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey on the digital pound during a September 2025 meeting. Farage later described the exchange at a crypto event.

The Bank stated the meeting was part of routine engagement with political figures. An existing inquiry into Farage under registration rules opened on May 13, 2026, remains in the fact-finding stage.

The complaint also draws attention to government plans to restrict cryptocurrency donations. Remaining stages of the Representation of the People Bill are scheduled for July 14, 2026.

The digital pound remains in a design phase through 2026, with no decision yet on whether to proceed.

The UK government has introduced strict new rules capping political donations from British citizens abroad at £100,000 annually and imposing an immediate moratorium on cryptocurrency contributions. The measures, prompted by scrutiny of large gifts from a Tether-linked billionaire to Reform UK, aim to curb foreign financial influence. Communities Secretary Steve Reed described the threat as more acute due to tracing challenges with overseas funds and crypto.
