OpenAI releases Codex Micro keypad as first hardware

OpenAI launched its first piece of branded hardware on Wednesday with the Codex Micro, a $230 mini-keypad designed to monitor and control Codex agents. The device was developed in collaboration with peripheral maker Work Louder and is available to order now in limited quantities.

The Codex Micro features 13 RGB-lit Agent Keys that display agent status along with customizable Command Keys. It includes a rotary dial to adjust the AI's reasoning level and a joystick for launching workflows. The keypad ships with 32 extra keycaps and connects via Bluetooth or USB-C to Mac and Windows devices.

Pre-orders are open through OpenAI's Supply Co. merch store and Work Louder, with an estimated ship date of July 24. The collaboration was first teased in June and marks a limited-run release that may sell out quickly.

The launch comes amid ongoing rumors about other OpenAI hardware projects, including a screenless smart speaker. The Codex Micro is positioned as a tool for developers using the Codex platform, which recently expanded beyond coding tasks.
