Paramount Pictures has scheduled the eighth installment of the Paranormal Activity franchise for a theatrical release on May 21, 2027. The film, directed by Ian Tuason and produced by James Wan, Jason Blum, and Oren Peli, marks Wan's first involvement in the series. Plot details remain under wraps as the project aims to revive the found-footage horror phenomenon.
The announcement of Paranormal Activity 8 comes from Paramount, which is co-financing the production with Blumhouse-Atomic Monster. Directed by Ian Tuason, the film lacks an official title beyond its numerical designation in some reports. Producers include James Wan and Jason Blum through their Blumhouse-Atomic Monster banner, alongside franchise creator Oren Peli via Solana Films. Executive producers are Michael Clear and Judson Scott from Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, and Steven Schneider of Room 101 Inc.
The original Paranormal Activity, directed and written by Peli, was produced for $15,000 with an additional $200,000 in post-production costs. It debuted in 2007, generating $194 million worldwide after its 2009 theatrical release by Paramount, establishing it as one of cinema's most profitable films due to its extraordinary return on investment. The franchise, known for redefining found-footage and supernatural horror, has expanded to seven films: Paranormal Activity 2 (2010), Paranormal Activity 3 (2011), Paranormal Activity 4 (2012), Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014), Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (2015), and Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (2021). Collectively, these entries have grossed over $900 million at the global box office.
This new entry follows Paramount's acquisition by Skydance Media last year, part of efforts to strengthen the studio's film lineup. On its release date, it will compete with Warner Bros.' animated family comedy Bad Fairies, voiced by Cynthia Erivo. Wan, known for directing Saw and The Conjuring, and Blum, behind hits like Get Out and The Purge, bring fresh energy to the long-running series.
