The Philadelphia Phillies are finalizing a one-year, $10 million contract with free agent outfielder Adolis García for the 2026 season, pending a physical. The 32-year-old is expected to replace Nick Castellanos in right field, providing a defensive upgrade. García was non-tendered by the Texas Rangers after batting .227 with 19 home runs in 2025.

García, who turns 33 in 2026, spent the last several seasons with the Texas Rangers, who non-tendered him in November after two subpar offensive years. In 2025, he hit .227 with 19 home runs, 75 RBIs, a .665 OPS and 91 OPS+. Over the previous two seasons, his combined OPS was .675 with a 96 OPS+. Earlier, from 2021 to 2023, García posted a .777 OPS and 113 OPS+, earned two American League All-Star selections and won the 2023 ALCS MVP award.
Defensively, García remains strong, recording plus-1 outs above average in right field in 2025, ranking 12th among 36 qualified right fielders per Baseball Savant. In contrast, Castellanos tied for last with minus-12 OAA this season.
The Phillies are actively seeking a trade for Castellanos, who has one year and $20 million left on his five-year, $100 million contract. Despite willingness to cover much of his salary, interest has been minimal. Sources indicate a trade, if it happens, would likely occur late in the offseason; otherwise, he faces release. It would be surprising if Castellanos attends spring training in February.
Castellanos faced issues this year, including a benching in June in Miami for inappropriate dugout behavior after manager Rob Thomson removed him defensively. He also voiced frustrations with Thomson in September. Over four seasons in Philadelphia, Castellanos slashed .260/.306/.426 with a .732 OPS and 100 OPS+, but his defense lagged with minus-32 OAA, seventh-worst among 267 qualified players. In 2025, he ranked last in fWAR at minus-0.6 and bWAR at minus-1 among 145 players.
García, meanwhile, contributed 2.7 bWAR and 0.7 fWAR this year. The Phillies' outfield now projects to feature García alongside Brandon Marsh, Justin Crawford, Otto Kemp and Weston Wilson, with Johan Rojas, Pedro Leon and Gabriel Rincones Jr. on the 40-man roster competing for spots.
The team has shown interest in re-signing free agent center fielder Harrison Bader but may pivot if they secure deals for Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto. Schwarber signed a five-year, $150 million extension last week, and Phillies president Dave Dombrowski expressed optimism about Realmuto, to whom an offer is extended. Bader is seeking a three-year pact.
