Roy Suryo and others not detained but must report in Jokowi diploma case

Polda Metro Jaya has named eight suspects in the case alleging a fake diploma for President Joko Widodo, including Roy Suryo, without detention but requiring weekly reports and a travel ban abroad. Roy Suryo responded casually to the ban, while his legal team rejected mediation proposals. The case involves defamation charges and violations of the ITE Law.

On November 7, 2025, Metro Jaya Police Chief Irjen Pol Asep Edi Suheri announced the naming of eight suspects in the case alleging a fake diploma for Indonesia's 7th President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). The suspects are divided into two clusters: the first includes ES, KTR, MRF, RE, and DHL; the second comprises RS (Roy Suryo), RHS (Rismon Sianipar Hasiholan), and TT (Tifauzia Tyassuma).

They are charged under Articles 310, 311, and 160 of the KUHP, along with various ITE Law provisions such as Article 27a jo Article 45 Paragraph 4 and Article 28 Paragraph 2 jo Article 45a Paragraph 2 for the first cluster, and Article 32 Paragraph 1 jo Article 48 Paragraph 1 and Article 35 jo Article 51 Paragraph 1 for the second.

On November 13, 2025, Roy Suryo, Rismon Sianipar Hasiholan, and Tifauzia Tyassuma were examined as suspects. Metro Jaya Police Public Relations Head Kombes Polisi Budi Hermanto stated that the suspects are not detained but must report weekly to Metro Jaya Police and are banned from traveling abroad to prevent flight. "Eight suspects are banned from going abroad and must report to Metro Jaya Police," said Budi Hermanto on November 20, 2025. Travel outside the city is allowed as long as reporting obligations are met.

Roy Suryo responded casually on November 21, 2025, saying he just smiled at the ban. "Well, I just smile in response to the statement that we are banned. It's okay," he said. He explained he had returned from Sydney, Australia, before the ban was imposed, and materials for a 'black paper' on the Jokowi diploma controversy were complete. Roy also mocked a private university in Singapore as dubious and clarified his status is not house arrest.

Meanwhile, Roy Suryo's legal team, represented by Ahmad Khozinudin, rejected mediation proposals suggested by figures like Faizal Assegaf and Prof. Jimly Asshiddiqie. "Once again, there is no peace with falsehood, no peace with lies, no falsehood with dishonesty. Once again, there is no compromise between al-haq and al-batil," Khozinudin asserted. He noted Jokowi never attended previous civil case mediations and stated the case stems from police criminalization. Khozinudin also urged the Polri Reform Commission to focus on institutional issues, not Jokowi's diploma.

What people are saying

Reactions on X to Roy Suryo and others being named suspects without detention but required to report weekly and banned from traveling abroad in the Jokowi diploma case show diverse views: skepticism demanding court proof of the diploma's authenticity before proceeding, support for the defamation charges, sarcastic mockery of the suspects' situation, calls for Jokowi to publicly verify his diploma, and rejection of mediation proposals in favor of full judicial process.
