Croatian defender Joško Gvardiol suffered a tibia fracture in his right leg during Manchester City's 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League, requiring surgery by the end of this week. This injury adds to other defensive absences in Pep Guardiola's team, heightening pressure in the title race. The club has acted quickly to bolster its backline.
Manchester City is facing a tough start to the year after confirming the severity of Joško Gvardiol's injury. During the Premier League match against Chelsea at Etihad Stadium, the Croatian defender clashed with Malo Gusto in the 51st minute and limped off, being substituted. The 1-1 draw, sealed by a late Chelsea goal, widened the gap with league leaders Arsenal.
In an official statement, the club announced that Gvardiol has a tibia fracture in his right leg and will undergo surgery by the end of this week, followed by ongoing evaluation to assess the full prognosis. This absence joins those of John Stones, still out; Nathan Aké, under medical care; and Rúben Dias, injured in the same game.
To address the issue, Manchester City recalled Max Alleyne from his loan at Championship side Watford. According to Manchester Evening News, Alleyne could be in the squad for the match against Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday, January 7, and start in the FA Cup third round against Exeter City on Saturday.
The team also continues interest in Marc Guehi, Crystal Palace's England international center-back, considering a January deal. Without a return date for Gvardiol, a pillar of the Sky Blues' defense, Guardiola must balance short-term fixes with long-term reinforcements to sustain the season's competitiveness.
