Karl Graf von Stauffenberg has sharply condemned comedian Uwe Steimle's remarks at an AfD event. Steimle had linked Friedrich Merz to resistance fighter Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg. Prosecutors in Dessau-Roßlau are now investigating possible disturbance of the public peace.
Karl Graf von Stauffenberg expressed disbelief to the Bild newspaper over Steimle's words. «I am speechless. This is historical distortion par excellence», he said. His grandfather had wanted to restore law, order and freedom.
Steimle had stated at the event in Dessau-Roßlau: «When I see Friedrich Merz, I sometimes ask myself, where is Stauffenberg when you really need him.» He had also commented on a portrait of Angela Merkel and made remarks that could be interpreted as threats.
Prosecutors opened proceedings under Section 126 of the Criminal Code. The AfD event took place a few weeks before the state election in Saxony-Anhalt and also drew attention for the singing of the GDR national anthem.
