Super Mario Bros. copy sells for record $3 million

A sealed early copy of Super Mario Bros. sold for $3 million at Heritage Auctions on June 12. The sale sets a new record for the highest price paid for any single video game.

The game received a 9.6 grade from the Professional Sports Authenticator. It features an intact gloss sticker seal from the second production run in 1985. Only three sealed copies from this run are known.

The lot also included a boxed NES console. Heritage Auctions described the item as the earliest known example from that production.

This exceeds the previous record of $1.5 million set by a Super Mario 64 copy in 2021. The new sale was graded by PSA rather than Wata Games.
