The tornado, classified as f3 with winds over 250 km/h, struck around 6 p.m. on friday, november 7, 2025, in rio bonito do iguaçu, a municipality with 14,000 residents located 400 km from curitiba. The phenomenon lasted about one minute, toppling houses, schools, and businesses, and also affected guarapuava and nearby cities like candói and laranjeiras do sul. Six people died: five in rio bonito do iguaçu — julia kwapis, 14; josé gieteski, 83; adriane maria de moura, 47; claudino paulino risse, 57; and jurandir nogueira ferreira, 49 — and one in guarapuava, josé neri geremias, 53. Over 750 were injured, with nine in serious condition, and about 1,000 displaced, plus 30 homeless.
The civil defense estimated damage to nearly 700 houses and 90% of the urban area, with searches concluded without reported missing persons. Governor ratinho jr. (psd) declared three days of mourning and a state of calamity, visiting the area on saturday, 8. "In a level 3 tornado, with winds over 250 km/h, it's hard for any house or commercial building to stay standing," he stated, noting solidarity from other governors for reconstruction.
