Women in Turkana are using social media platforms to sell traditional baskets and expand their markets inside and outside Kenya.
Ruth Acharait, a mother over 50 years old from Lodwar, says basket weaving is a heritage passed down from their ancestors. She is a member of the Lodwar Baskets and Beads Youth Group, both founded in 2013.
The groups have grown through the use of WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X. Basket sales have doubled since they opened social media accounts.
The IMARA project implemented by World Vision Kenya in partnership with the Swedish Embassy was completed in April 2026. It was funded with SEK211 million and reached more than 73,000 people in nine arid and semi-arid counties including Turkana.
