Venezuela militarizes disaster region after double earthquake

Venezuela's government has handed control to the armed forces in the state of La Guaira after severe earthquakes. The official death toll stands at 920.

On Wednesday earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck northern Venezuela. La Guaira, home to the international airport and the country's main seaport, was hardest hit.

On Friday an aftershock of magnitude 4.9 shook the northern coast. The government closed access roads to ease rescue operations and minimize health risks.

More than 3300 people were injured and around 50,000 are reported missing. Thousands of homeless residents seek shelter in parks and along roadsides.

Germany dispatched aid flights carrying experts from the Technical Relief Agency. Oil production remains unaffected at 1.2 million barrels per day.
