Brazilian actor Wagner Moura has been confirmed to lead the remake of the Palme d'Or-winning film 'Taste of Cherry' from 1997 Cannes. Directed by Lisandro Alonso, the project is set to begin filming later in 2026. The announcement came from Moura's interview with Variety magazine.
Wagner Moura, riding a wave of international success, will take the lead role in a remake of the Iranian classic 'Taste of Cherry', directed by Abbas Kiarostami. The original film, which won the Palme d'Or at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, follows a man planning his suicide and struggling to find someone to bury his body afterward.
Directed by Argentine filmmaker Lisandro Alonso, the remake will retain the core story, retelling it in a modern context. Filming is scheduled to start later in 2026, as revealed by Moura in an interview with Variety.
This announcement comes at a high point in Moura's career. In May 2025, he won the best actor award at Cannes for 'The Secret Agent', directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho. Set in the 1970s during Brazil's military dictatorship, the film tracks Armando, a former teacher on the run with his son amid intensifying repression.
'The Secret Agent' also earned Moura an Oscar nomination for best actor. The production is nominated in three other categories: best picture, best international feature, and best casting direction, further cementing his global acclaim.
