Berlin's governing mayor Kai Wegner called his CDU party's drop in a recent election poll a concerning signal for the city. The Left Party leads with 20 percent, followed by the Greens and AfD.
About two and a half months before the state election on September 20, the Left Party leads a poll published Wednesday by Infratest dimap with 20 percent. The Greens follow with 19 percent, the AfD with 18 percent. The CDU stands at 17 percent and the SPD at 13 percent.
Wegner told the Tagesspiegel: «The numbers are anything but good, that is clear. But they are also a warning signal for the city. We have a clear strengthening of the fringes.» He cited his own mistakes and the federal trend costing coalition parties support nationwide as reasons.
The mayor said he would highlight his government's achievements such as administrative reform and easier housing construction more strongly in the campaign. «The election campaign is a different one as of today,» he added.
