The magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off Sarangani on June 8 has destroyed at least 1,462 classrooms in Mindanao, the Department of Education reported. Power grids in Mindanao and Visayas were placed under yellow alert amid plant outages linked to the quake.
The Department of Education said 1,442 classrooms sustained major damage and 4,398 incurred minor damage as of June 10. A total of 1,022 schools across five regions reported damage, with the highest numbers in South Cotabato, North Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat. In-person classes remain suspended for 4,364 classes. The National Grid Corp of the Philippines placed the Mindanao grid under yellow alert from noon to 3 p.m. on June 10 due to multiple plant outages, including units affected by the earthquake. Available capacity stood at 2,731 megawatts against peak demand of 2,611 MW. The Visayas grid was under red alert earlier that day before being downgraded to yellow. Rescue and relief efforts continue, with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reporting 45 deaths and nearly 500 injured as of June 11. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. visited General Santos City, while Vice President Sara Duterte met victims in Sarangani province.
