6.9 magnitude earthquake in Chile felt in São Paulo

A 6.9 magnitude earthquake in Chile was felt by residents in São Paulo and Greater São Paulo on Monday evening (25). The tremor struck at 6:52 p.m. Brasília time at a depth of 101.3 km.

The Seismology Center at USP and the Brazilian Seismographic Network recorded the quake in northern Chile. Residents in the neighborhoods of Lapa, Pompeia and Perdizes reported the tremor, which was also noted in Osasco, Santos, Mogi das Cruzes and Campinas.

The Brazilian Seismographic Network explained that Andean quakes can be felt in São Paulo because the city sits on a sedimentary basin that amplifies seismic waves. The note added that structural damage was unlikely.

Residents shared accounts on social media. One Pompeia resident wrote: "I just felt a tremor for seconds on my balcony, thought it was dizziness, but all the plants were shaking". São Paulo's Civil Defense said it was in contact with USP's Seismology Center.
