Bandung Barat hit by landslides and floods, BMKG warns of extreme weather

Kabupaten Bandung Barat has been struck by landslides and floods due to heavy rain over the past few days. Regent Jeje Ritchie Ismail has ordered accelerated disaster response efforts, while BMKG warns of potential extreme weather for the coming week. No fatalities have been reported.

Heavy rains pounding Kabupaten Bandung Barat (KBB) since the end of the week have triggered landslides and floods across various sub-districts. According to data from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) KBB, disasters struck Desa Mukapayung in Cililin Sub-district, where the overflow of Sungai Cibitung damaged rice fields and tourist spots, and blocked road access. Landslides also occurred in Desa Kidang Pananjung, Nangerang, and Cililin, threatening residents' homes. In Lembang Sub-district, one house in Desa Mekarwangi was damaged by a landslide, while three houses in Desa Jayagiri were affected by the collapse of a retaining wall. Parongpong Sub-district recorded three damaged houses in Desa Karyawangi, and in Sindangkerta Sub-district, landslides impacted three houses in Desa Cikadu, five in Desa Rancasenggang, and threatened 43 houses in Desa Buninagara, including roads, bridges, and MA Darusyifa school. In Batujajar Sub-district, strong winds damaged the roof of one house in Desa Selacau, while floods in Gununghalu Sub-district are still being assessed.

Regent Jeje Ritchie Ismail has instructed local government agencies to accelerate response efforts. "I have ordered BPBD, PUPR, and others to remain alert and act quickly, especially in providing aid and handling," he said. Heavy machinery has been deployed to clear landslide debris, and assistance is being distributed. West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi contacted Jeje to ensure swift solutions and public safety. "The Governor called me, essentially asking to speed up solutions and ensure the community is safe," Jeje stated. No lives were lost, though damages include collapsed roads and lightly to severely damaged houses.

The Bandung Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned of rising rainfall in the Bandung Raya area, including KBB, which is prone to hydrometeorological disasters. "In connection with the potential increase in rain intensity, the public and related agencies should remain vigilant against potential hydrometeorological disasters," said BMKG Bandung Station Head Teguh Rahayu. Heavy rain could be accompanied by thunder and strong winds, causing puddles, floods, landslides, and fallen trees, especially in hilly areas. The forecast for the next week: partly cloudy to cloudy with light to heavy rain in the afternoon to evening. West Java's rainy season is peaking from November 2025 to March 2026, supported by high humidity of 50-90 percent and warm sea surface temperature anomalies. Residents are urged to clean rivers, shelter indoors during bad weather, and stay alert through January.
