Firefighters and São Paulo civil defense agents began searching on Friday (3) for the father of a Brazilian student in La Guaira, Venezuela, following a help request.
The operation started after an appeal by student Daniel Medina, 28, seeking information on his father Félix Tovar Hernandez, 70. Agents are removing rubble from a collapsed bakery in La Guaira, the area hardest hit by the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24.
Daniel said the Brazilian Humanitarian Mission contacted the family on Thursday (2) and received data on where Félix might be. The father had a flight to Chile scheduled for Friday and split time between Brazil and Venezuela.
The team set up an advanced base with satellite internet and solar power, coordinated by Lieutenant Ramatuel Silvino. There is no set end to the searches, which will continue while there is a chance of locating the missing man. The death toll from the earthquakes reached 2,645 as of Friday, according to the Venezuelan government.
