Congress approached the Supreme Court on Wednesday over the rejection of Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination for Rajya Sabha seats from Madhya Pradesh, after also meeting Election Commission officials.
The returning officer rejected Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination on Tuesday following an objection by BJP’s Mahesh Kewat and Rahul Kothari over nondisclosure of a Telangana case. A Congress delegation met Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Wednesday and urged the commission to use its powers under Article 324 to reverse the order. Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued that Section 33A of the Representation of the People Act requires disclosure only after cognizance and framing of charges. The party is set to approach the Supreme Court on Thursday. State Congress President Jitu Patwari announced protests while Chief Minister Mohan Yadav blamed internal Congress infighting for the rejection.
