On a recent morning, Kevin Dykes was driving his Tesla Cybertruck on an Oregon highway when an old red pickup truck ahead of him shed a 2-foot by 2-foot sheet of metal. Traveling at highway speeds of 70 mph, the debris flew backward and made direct contact with Dykes' vehicle, as captured by the Cybertruck's sentry cameras.
The impact was described by Dykes as 'incredibly loud and violent.' It gouged the hood, scraped the glass, and severely damaged the light bar, bending it at the top. Photos shared by Dykes show scratches on the black wrap over the stainless steel, but the underlying metal appears unscathed. The windshield sustained only tiny chips and remained fully intact.
In a post on the Tesla Cybertruck Owners Facebook group, Dykes wrote: “Well, I had a not-so-great morning after taking a direct hit at 70 miles an hour from a 2‘ x 2‘ piece of metal. It gouged the hood, scraped the glass, and did a number on my light bar (ignore the fresh, pitiful epoxy repair). It was an incredibly loud and violent hit to the truck, but if it had been a typical sheet metal hood or a thinner windshield, it would have mangled them. While I’m pretty upset that my aesthetics are all messed up, I’m quite impressed by how little damage was done. A very strong truck.”
Dykes emphasized his gratitude for the Cybertruck's build, noting that a conventional vehicle might have suffered far worse, potentially creating a dangerous situation. The incident highlights the truck's marketed durability, stemming from its cold-rolled stainless steel exterior designed for rugged conditions.
