Deadline issued for civil societies to register assets

The authority overseeing civil society organizations has issued a stern warning to 100 institutions in the civil society sector to register their property. Of these, 70 are foreign organizations. The deadline for registration is up to Hidar 13, 2018 E.C.

The authority overseeing and regulating civil society organizations in Addis Ababa issued a letter on Hidar 22, 2017 E.C. (corresponding to October 30, 2025 Gregorian) to institutions under oversight in the civil society sector, urging them to register their property within a specified deadline. This process aims to verify the utilization of public assets and compile overall information on the sector, without affecting the organizations' legal ownership rights.

The letter emphasizes that the registration does not infringe on the property ownership rights granted to civil societies by law. Under Proclamation No. 1113/2011, the authority bears the responsibility to ensure that assets held in the public's name are used for public purposes, and this registration is crucial for fulfilling that mandate.

At the national level, the registration process is deemed necessary to measure, classify, and gather information on the extent of property in the civil society sector that is subject or not subject to oversight. This initiative provides a comprehensive overview of the sector while preserving the institutions' rights.
