Egypt signs deals for 500 AC rail coaches and workshop management

Egypt's Ministry of Transport oversaw the signing of two agreements between Egyptian National Railways and the National Egyptian Railway Industries Company (NERIC) to localize production of 500 air-conditioned passenger railcars and establish a company for Kom Abu Radi workshops. The deals were signed at NERIC's facility in the presence of Transport Minister Kamel Al-Wazir and Labor Minister Hassan Shehata.

Egypt's Ministry of Transport oversaw the signing of two agreements at NERIC's manufacturing facility between Egyptian National Railways and the National Egyptian Railway Industries Company (NERIC). The first covers local production of 500 modern air-conditioned passenger railcars to upgrade the national fleet and enhance passenger services.

Transport Minister Kamel Al-Wazir stated the deals follow President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's directives to localize strategic industries in transport. He noted Egypt is developing domestic manufacturing to meet local needs and prepare for exports, while involving the private sector to foster competition and improve employee conditions.

The second agreement creates a specialized company to operate and manage the Kom Abu Radi railway workshops, a major maintenance hub, boosting repair efficiency and fleet readiness. This builds on prior NERIC contracts, including 40 metro trains (320 cars) with Hyundai Rotem for Cairo Metro Lines 2 and 3, and 21 trains for the Alexandria Metro.

Labor Minister Hassan Shehata called the agreements a key step to strengthen Egypt's industrial base and create quality jobs, aligning workforce skills with technology. NERIC Managing Director Ahmed El-Mofty described the 500-coach contract as a milestone in the rolling stock sector, expanding into maintenance services.
