Minister Mahmoud Esmat announced during a visit to Benban and Abydos projects that Egypt will add 1,000 MW of renewable energy and 600 MWh of battery storage to the national grid in the coming months.
Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat made the announcement during a field visit to the Benban Solar Park and the Abydos 2 solar power project in Aswan Governorate on June 13.
Esmat inaugurated an upgraded digital electricity platform for the Benban Solar Park, developed through the Egyptian-German Joint Committee for Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Environmental Protection in cooperation with Nexus Analytica. He also witnessed the signing of a contract between the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company and Nexus Analytica to establish a Digital Power Purchase Agreement Management Center.
The minister reviewed progress on the 1,000 MW Abydos 2 project, which includes 600 MWh of battery storage, and ongoing work to add 270 MW to Benban, raising its total capacity from 1,465 MW to 1,735 MW.
Esmat said reducing dependence on fossil fuels and reaching 45 percent renewable energy in the national mix within two years remains a key directive from President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.
