The Suwon District Court on Saturday sentenced former Gyeonggi Province Vice Governor Lee Hwa-young to four months in prison for perjury.
Lee Hwa-young was indicted after testifying at a 2024 parliamentary hearing that he and Kim Seong-tae, former Chairman of Ssangbangwool, received alcohol and raw salmon during a prosecution interrogation over an illegal remittance to North Korea in 2019.
The court ruled that Lee's testimonies lacked consistency and credibility. He is already serving seven years and eight months for colluding in the US$3.94 million transfer and receiving bribes.
The ruling dismissed abuse of power charges against Lee but recognized prosecutorial overreach in multiple indictments. Jeong Jeom-sig, Floor Leader of the People Power Party, called the case a grand deception against the public.
