Ford and Tesla lead U.S. brands in Consumer Reports' 2026 top vehicles

Consumer Reports announced its 2026 Top 10 Vehicles list on February 3, highlighting Ford and Tesla as the only U.S.-based brands to secure spots. The rankings draw from road tests, reliability data, and owner surveys, emphasizing fuel economy and usability. Subaru and Toyota each claimed two entries, reflecting strengths in multi-energy strategies.

The Consumer Reports' 2026 Top 10 Vehicles list, released on February 3, showcases standout models across categories based on rigorous road tests, reliability rankings, and owner surveys. Ford and Tesla emerged as the sole U.S.-based brands represented, with Ford's Maverick small pickup and F-150 full-size pickup making the cut, alongside Tesla's Model Y electric vehicle.

Subaru and Toyota led with two vehicles each: Subaru's Crosstrek subcompact SUV and Forester compact SUV, and Toyota's Camry midsize car and Grand Highlander midsize SUV. Other honorees include the Honda Civic small car, Lexus NX luxury compact SUV, and BMW X5 luxury midsize SUV.

"Reliability and fuel economy come to the top time and again," said Alex Knizek, CR's director of auto test development. The list prioritizes vehicles with broad powertrain options, including gasoline, hybrid, and electric, though the Tesla Model Y stands alone as electric-only. Usability also plays a key role, focusing on intuitive controls that keep drivers' eyes on the road.

For the F-150, the first full-size pickup on the list since 2019, Knizek noted, "The F-series is a huge seller. When we saw the F-series quality was on the list, it was a no-brainer to include it." Every winner features standard automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection at neighborhood and highway speeds.

In a separate development, Consumer Reports introduced its Safety Verdict ratings for brands, led by Mazda, followed by Genesis, Acura, and Lincoln—the only U.S. brand in the top 10 at fourth place. The ratings assess safety features across models, incorporating crash test performance and braking distances.

This third-party validation helps consumers navigate choices, as Stephanie Brinley of S&P Global Mobility pointed out: "It gives consumers a third-party touchpoint if they’re considering vehicles." The honors apply to all trim levels of the winners, except the recently launched Subaru Crosstrek hybrid.

Tesla has achieved its highest-ever position in Consumer Reports' 2026 Automotive Brand Report Card, placing 10th overall among 26 brands. The electric vehicle maker ranked ninth in reliability, marking a significant improvement from previous years. This positions Tesla as the only all-electric brand in the top 10, though used models lag behind.

Consumer Reports' latest study ranks Tesla dead last for reliability among used cars aged five to ten years, with a score of 31 out of 100. The electric vehicle maker trails behind Jeep, which scored 32, based on owner-reported problems from over 140,000 vehicles. While older models face issues tied to early production challenges, newer Teslas show marked improvement.

In its final 2025 model evaluations, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the Tesla Cybertruck a Top Safety Pick rating for crew cab models built after April, confirming strong crash test and avoidance performance from prior tests. This places the Cybertruck alongside the Toyota Tundra as one of only two large pickups to earn the honor this year, part of a release recognizing 16 additional models.

The Tesla Model Y receives a significant update in its second generation, according to a new review from Top Gear. Described as the world's best-selling car, the electric SUV faces questions about whether the changes will maintain its leading position. The review was published on January 20, 2026.

Elon Musk recently praised the Cybertruck as Tesla's best vehicle ever on social media, but sales data tells a different story. Reports indicate that fewer than 2.5% of reservations have converted to actual purchases, lagging behind other Tesla models. This disconnect highlights ongoing challenges for the electric truck.

Toyota Motor Corp. group held the top spot in global auto sales for the sixth straight year in 2025, with group sales rising 4.6% to 11.32 million units. Strong demand for hybrid vehicles in North America helped it outperform Volkswagen significantly. The achievement came despite trade tensions and rising Chinese competition.

Tesla's US EV market share jumped 30% to 56% in November 2025 despite a 23% sales drop to 39,800 units—the weakest quarter since 2022—while overall EV sales fell 41% post-tax credit expiration. Legacy rivals like Ford and GM face billions in losses amid a fragmented market.
