Four people died and 14 others were injured when a passenger jeepney crashed into a tree and overturned in Socorro town, Oriental Mindoro, on Sunday.
The crash happened at 11:45 a.m. on May 10 in Sitio Taguicay, Barangay Fortuna. The jeepney was carrying 18 passengers, mostly relatives, who were heading to the Fortuna River for an outing. Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Vinscent Gahol said the four fatalities were all residents of Gloria town.
Police reported that the vehicle's brakes failed while it was traveling down a curved section of the road. The driver steered the jeepney into a tree to avoid a ravine, causing the vehicle to overturn on its side.
The 14 injured passengers were taken to Grace Mission Hospital in Barangay Catiningan, Socorro. The jeepney remains at the accident site as authorities continue their investigation.
