Four fans died during massive celebrations at the Angel of Independence after Mexico's victory over Ecuador in the 2026 World Cup. Mexico City authorities confirmed three deaths by asphyxia and one from cardiorespiratory arrest.
The June 30, 2026 match, which Mexico won 2-0, drew nearly one million people to Paseo de la Reforma. Three victims were found unconscious near the monument and a fourth suffered a seizure before being taken to hospital.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino expressed condolences in a statement: “We have been deeply saddened to learn of the tragic deaths of four people in Mexico City”. Mexico City head of government Clara Brugada called for a “culture of care” at large events.
Security secretary Pablo Vázquez said no barriers will be installed for the July 5 match against England, as they could raise stampede risks. The British government updated its travel alert citing the incidents and mobile phone thefts during the tournament.
