A four-year-old child died after drowning in the pool at Centro Esportivo Lapa, known as Pelezão, in São Paulo's west zone, on Tuesday afternoon (December 23). The facility was open for recreational use when the incident happened around 5 p.m. Rescue teams attempted to revive the child, but she did not survive.
The tragic incident took place at Centro Esportivo Lapa, also known as Pelezão, managed by the Municipal Secretariat of Sports and Leisure (SEME), in São Paulo's west zone. The pool was open to the general public for recreational activities that Tuesday afternoon, December 23.
According to SEME, the four-year-old child was on an outing organized by an institutional shelter service, along with other children. Around 5 p.m., she drowned, and the on-duty lifeguard team immediately began rescue procedures. The Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) and Fire Department were called and performed resuscitation maneuvers, but death was confirmed on site.
The Metropolitan Civil Guard (GCM) also arrived to provide support and secure the area. The case was filed at the 91st Police District, which will investigate the circumstances of the drowning.
In an official statement, the Sports and Leisure Secretariat expressed regret for the incident and said it is awaiting forensic reports to clarify the causes of death. "The case is being monitored by the competent authorities," the department stated. No further details on the victim's identity or potential safety lapses are available, as investigations are ongoing.
