Italian police raided the seaside villa on Saturday, where Mazzarella was staying with his wife and two children. Heavily armed officers stormed the property, supported by a patrol boat, according to a police statement. The operation proceeded without resistance from the suspect, who had evaded capture since January 28, 2025, when authorities sought to arrest him on murder charges linked to a fatal shooting at a Naples delicatessen in 2000. Police described the charge as aggravated homicide tied to a mafia-type criminal association, as noted on his wanted poster from Italy's interior ministry, which listed him among the country's most dangerous fugitives. Officers seized 20,000 euros in cash and three luxury watches during the search. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni praised the police in an online post late Saturday, stating, 'This sends a clear message that the state will not back down.' Chiara Colosimo, president of the Anti-Mafia Commission, expressed approval on X, calling it 'a brilliant operation.' The Mazzarella clan, known for counterfeiting activities in Naples, has faced recent crackdowns, including the detention of 16 alleged associates last month on cyber fraud charges.
