Activist Calvince Okoth, known as Gaucho, has defended his appointment by Governor Johnson Sakaja to the Mama Lucy Hospital board. He says despite limited formal education, he possesses sufficient wisdom to contribute. The appointment has sparked online complaints over his educational background.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has appointed Calvince Okoth, known as Gaucho, alongside Benga musician Kennedy Wambua Ngunze, alias Ken wa Maria, and Triza Miroya to the Mama Lucy Hospital board. The appointments have faced online criticism, particularly over Gaucho's limited education.
Gaucho, a longtime ODM supporter, thanked God and the late Raila Odinga, who had endorsed the appointment three years ago. "I thank God and also the late Raila Odinga... I believe this appointment will motivate youth," he said. Raila had advised him to take responsibility and pay himself a salary while serving the community.
Prior to this, Gaucho received a salary from the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation until Raila's death. He thought the appointment was a joke until Mama Ida Odinga, Raila's wife, called to congratulate him and urged: "Help the community, defend rights, and do not allow people to be oppressed."
Gaucho argues that board service requires wisdom and understanding more than school education. "Those who doubt me, give me time... I will defend people and fight for their rights," he pledged.
