New York Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole struggled on extra rest Monday night, surrendering five runs over 4 1/3 innings against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.
Cole, who entered with a 2.57 ERA, yielded nine hits including a 422-foot homer by Riley Greene. The Tigers put a leadoff runner on in each of the first five innings and scored in three consecutive frames to build a 5-1 lead.
In the fourth inning a dirt camera near second base popped up. Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. used his cleat to push it back into place, drawing humorous commentary from the Detroit broadcast booth before groundskeepers completed repairs.
The delay lasted about five minutes. Cole was relieved by Paul Blackburn while trailing 5-1, raising his ERA to 3.62.
