Greg Nwokolo and Persija Jakarta coach Mauricio Souza have defended defender Shayne Pattynama against harsh criticism from football pundit Bung Binder following a loss to Bhayangkara FC. The criticism blamed Pattynama for a late winning goal despite him entering as a substitute. Both figures highlighted Pattynama's injury recovery and limited playing time.
Persija Jakarta lost 2-3 to Bhayangkara FC on April 5, 2026. Shayne Pattynama came on as a substitute in the 77th minute and was held responsible for Bhayangkara's winning goal in the 90+5th, with pundit Bung Binder calling him “unable to play at all”.
Former Indonesia national team striker Greg Nwokolo expressed fury on Instagram. “This type of pundit is why Indonesian fans never truly understand football,” he wrote. He stressed Pattynama's three-month injury layoff, limited minutes since joining from Buriram United, and his experience with clubs in Europe and Asia.
“Before you criticize or talk nonsense, you should know the player's and team's condition first,” Greg added.
Persija coach Mauricio Souza also defended him on April 10, 2026. “I didn't know about the issue, but I disagree with his talk. I think Shayne Pattynama has great potential,” he said. Souza noted Pattynama's four appearances totaling 54 minutes, competition with impressive Dony Tri Pamungkas, and optimism for his national team return.
