IEBC dismisses fake notice declaring UDA candidates elected

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has warned against a circulating fake gazette notice claiming two United Democratic Alliance candidates were duly elected for upcoming by-elections. The notice, deemed false by the IEBC, pertains to wards in Baringo County ahead of the November 27 polls. The commission urged the public to rely only on official channels for verified information.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) issued a statement on October 24, 2025, cautioning Kenyans about a fraudulent gazette notice spreading on social media. The notice falsely claimed that the IEBC had declared two United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party candidates as duly elected Members of the County Assembly for Tembelio and Metkei wards, alleging they were running unopposed in the by-elections set for November 27, 2025.

In its clarification, the IEBC emphasized that no official gazette notice had been issued declaring any candidates elected. “The Gazette Notice circulating online titled ‘Declaration of No Contest for Members of Tembelio and Metkei Wards in the By-Elections scheduled for 27th November 2025’ is fake,” the statement read. “The Commission advises the public to disregard it. Visit our website and verified social media accounts for accurate information.”

The commission highlighted the importance of vigilance against misinformation as the by-elections approach, noting that only communications from official IEBC channels should be trusted. These by-elections include the Baringo Senatorial race and seats in Banissa, Kasipul, Magarini, Malava, Mbeere North, and Ugunja constituencies.

Additionally, the IEBC outlined the campaign schedule, stating that activities for the November 27 by-elections would run from October 8 to November 24, 2025, daily between 7am and 6pm. IEBC Vice-Chairperson Julius Edung specified: “The campaign period for purposes of the Thursday, 27th November 2025 by-elections shall commence on Wednesday, 8th October 2025, and cease on Monday, 24th November 2025, being 48 hours before the by-election day.” Campaigning outside these hours would violate electoral regulations.

This incident underscores ongoing efforts to maintain electoral integrity amid potential disinformation campaigns.
