Jose Altuve headed to injured list with oblique strain

The Houston Astros will lose second baseman Jose Altuve to a Grade 2 left oblique strain just as shortstop Jeremy Peña and center fielder Jake Meyers prepare to return from the injured list.

Manager Joe Espada announced the injury after Sunday’s 8-0 loss to the Rangers at Daikin Park. Altuve exited Saturday’s game in pain after a double play and underwent an MRI on Sunday morning. The team has not yet placed him on the injured list or provided a timetable for his return.

The move comes after Seager experienced minor back spasms that kept him out of recent games. Utilityman Michael Helman has been recalled from Triple-A Round Rock to fill the roster spot.
