The Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration has issued an advisory prohibiting the sale and promotion of foods high in fat, sugar and salt within 50 metres of schools and colleges.

The advisory was issued on July 24 under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. It directs schools, colleges and nearby food businesses to stop selling or advertising such products on campus or within the specified radius.

Health Minister U.T. Khader announced the measure on Friday after inspections found some school meals relied heavily on refined carbohydrates. He said schools must now serve balanced meals with cereals, millets, pulses, milk products, eggs, fruits and vegetables.

Food Safety Officers will conduct regular checks. Violations will face action under the Act. The advisory also requires all nearby establishments to obtain proper licences and maintain hygiene standards.
