Formula 1 championship leader Kimi Antonelli secured pole position for Mercedes at the 2026 Miami Grand Prix with a stunning 1:27.798 Q3 lap, beating Max Verstappen amid sweltering 34C heat and track temperatures over 50C. The full provisional grid, pending FIA approval, sets the stage for Sunday's 4pm local race amid potential thunderstorms.
Qualifying unfolded under intense heat, starting at 4pm local time. Antonelli took command in Q1 with a 1m28.653s lap after Verstappen initially led. Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto suffered power unit failure, McLaren's Oscar Piastri scraped into Q2 in 16th on used tyres, Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad was eliminated in 17th, and Nico Hulkenberg exited in 11th after missing the sprint race start due to issues. In Q2, Verstappen set a 1m28.116s to lead, with both Alpines advancing—Franco Colapinto achieving his first Q3 for the team since Azerbaijan 2024. Liam Lawson, plus Haas and Williams drivers, failed to reach Q3. Antonelli dominated Q3, posting 1:27.798 early—three tenths clear of rivals via a strong first sector. Verstappen's final lap secured second (1:27.964), ahead of Leclerc (1:28.143). Lando Norris, sprint race winner, took fourth, followed by George Russell fifth, Lewis Hamilton sixth, Piastri seventh, Colapinto eighth, Hadjar ninth, and Pierre Gasly tenth. Antonelli, leading after wins in China and Japan, held pole comfortably without improving. Mercedes principal Toto Wolff praised the 19-year-old. "That first lap was really special... three or more tenths ahead of the next guy. Spectacular," Wolff told Sky Sports F1, defending the junior programme's faith in Antonelli from karts to F2. He noted Russell's P5 despite struggles on the smooth asphalt. Full provisional starting grid (pending FIA approval): 1. Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes); 2. Max Verstappen (Red Bull); 3.
