Marathon game director Joe Ziegler leaves Bungie

Joe Ziegler stepped down as game director of Marathon on July 17. He handed leadership to Del Chafe III, who will work with creative director Julia Nardin.

Ziegler confirmed the move in a post on X. He praised his successors and said they are ready to guide the extraction shooter forward.

The departure follows mass layoffs at Bungie in June that cut roughly 300 positions. General manager Scott Taylor was among those let go and has been replaced by Joshua Deane. Senior design lead Lars Bakken also left the studio.

Marathon has seen declining player numbers on Steam, with a recent all-time low peak of 2,030 concurrent users reported on July 9. Sony has stated it remains committed to the title, though a full PvE mode is not expected until the fall.

Sony has taken a major financial hit on its bungie acquisition, recording an impairment loss of roughly $765 million for the fiscal year. The charge stems from underperformance by destiny 2 and the new extraction shooter marathon.

Joe Ziegler has departed Bungie after serving as director of Marathon for three and a half years. He announced his exit on Twitter, with his final day at the studio being July 17.

Bungie has revealed a multi-season roadmap for Marathon aimed at expanding its player base through new modes and improvements. The announcement comes as the game's first season winds down with boosted events and a progress reset ahead of season two. Game director Joe Ziegler detailed experiments with PVE and PVP-lite experiences to make the extraction shooter more accessible.

Bungie confirmed it will provide the base edition of Marathon at no cost to players who purchased the Deluxe Edition upgrade during the Open Play Week at a discounted price. The move addresses confusion on the PlayStation Store where the bundle appeared cheaper than expected. The studio also extended the free-to-play period for the extraction shooter.
