Mexico City activates double alert for low temperatures on January 2

Mexico City will face temperatures near 0 degrees in the early morning of Friday, January 2, prompting the Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection to activate two alerts. Authorities recommend preventive measures to safeguard health amid the extreme cold and rising respiratory illnesses. Free vaccination modules against Covid, influenza, and pneumococcus are available at several locations in the capital.

The year 2026 started with persistent cold in Mexico City, set to continue until the seasonal change. For the early morning of January 2, temperatures near 0 degrees are expected, particularly in boroughs like Tlalpan, where they could drop to 1 degree. Other areas, including Álvaro Obregón, Cuajimalpa, Magdalena Contreras, Milpa Alta, and Xochimilco, will see between 4 and 6 degrees.

The Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) has activated two alerts to address the risks from the cold, which include a higher incidence of respiratory diseases. Recommendations include keeping spaces ventilated when using heaters or fireplaces, dressing warmly and covering the nose and mouth, avoiding sudden temperature changes, consuming water and foods rich in vitamins A and C, updating seasonal vaccination schedules, applying moisturizer for the skin, and sheltering pets from the cold.

To combat respiratory infections, authorities have set up free vaccination modules without requiring registration. These operate Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at locations such as Marina Nacional 60 in Tacuba (Miguel Hidalgo), Avenida Homero 213 in Polanco V Section (Miguel Hidalgo), Agrarismo 227 in Escandón (Miguel Hidalgo), and Francisco de P. Miranda 157 in Lomas de Plateros (Álvaro Obregón). The campaign prioritizes children under five, adults over 60, people with at-risk conditions, and healthcare workers, offering vaccines against Covid, influenza, and pneumococcus.

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) forecasts extreme cold in other parts of the country. In mountainous areas of Chihuahua and Durango, temperatures will range from -10 to -5 degrees with frost. High zones in Baja California, Sonora, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, Michoacán, State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Veracruz, and Oaxaca will experience -5 to 0 degrees. In Coahuila, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Querétaro, Mexico City, and Morelos, estimates are 0 to 5 degrees.
