Mexico City pioneers buttock augmentation history

Mexico City has been a hub for gluteal enhancement innovations since the late 1970s. Plastic surgeon Mario González-Ulloa pioneered silicone buttock implants there in 1979, earning the title of 'grandfather of buttock augmentation.' Later, Ramón Cuenca-Guerra advanced the field with detailed criteria for attractive buttocks.

In 1979, Mexico City emerged as a key center for buttock augmentation when plastic surgeon Mario González-Ulloa installed the first pair of silicone implants designed specifically for the buttocks. The textbook Body Sculpting with Silicone Implants refers to González-Ulloa as the “grandfather of buttock augmentation.”

By the early 2000s, a new wave of experts in Mexico City continued this legacy, including Ramón Cuenca-Guerra. In his 2004 paper titled “What Makes Buttocks Beautiful?,” Cuenca-Guerra outlined four characteristics that “determine attractive buttocks” and identified five types of “defects,” providing strategies to correct each. For example, defect type 5 is described as the “senile buttock,” which the author personally identifies with.

González-Ulloa's earlier work included charcoal depictions contrasting the “typical ‘happy buttock’”—characterized as high, rounded, and dimpled—with the low-slung, drooping “sad buttock.” This historical context highlights Mexico City's protruding role in the evolution of gluteal enhancement procedures.

The article, an excerpt from a book, also touches on broader trends: for years, plastic surgeons believed beautiful buttocks proportions followed the Fibonacci sequence, but contemporary preferences lean toward a more Kardashian-inspired shape.
