After the June 30 tragedy that left four dead at the Angel of Independence, Mexico City authorities announced a special operation for the Sunday, July 5 match against England.
Pablo Vázquez, Mexico City security secretary, confirmed that access to the monument will not be restricted. He explained that the plan aims to reduce crowd flows and clear nearby streets to prevent crush incidents like those on Tuesday.
“We will take different measures so that flows to the Angel are cut off, that there are fewer people,” Vázquez stated in an interview. Adjustments to public transport and an operation against motorcycles are also being prepared.
Clara Brugada, head of government, presented a map with additional attention modules, screens and restrooms on Paseo de la Reforma and surrounding areas. The priority, she said, is that people return home safely.
Witnesses described the chaos on Tuesday night, when thousands of fans celebrated the 2-0 win over Ecuador. The victims were identified as two women and two men, three from asphyxia and one from medical complications.
