Muhammadiyah chairman Haedar Nashir said ongoing global conflicts are difficult to end because they involve influential nations holding veto power at the United Nations.
Haedar Nashir delivered his remarks in Yogyakarta on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. He noted that wars involving major powers often reach dead ends in peace efforts.
He said the United Nations should lead efforts to end conflicts. Nashir condemned Israel for detaining three Indonesian journalists and activists during the Global Sumud Flotilla humanitarian mission to Gaza.
He stressed that Muhammadiyah rejects all forms of violence and urged the UN to act on the incident. Nashir hoped Israel would avoid arbitrary measures against peace missions.
