Myanmar replaces Afghanistan as key opium source, impact seen on India’s eastern border: NCB

Myanmar has emerged as a major global opium supplier following Afghanistan’s production drop, with effects visible along India’s eastern borders, according to a new report.

The Narcotics Control Bureau released its 2026 annual report on June 26, 2026. Home Minister Amit Shah presented the findings, which noted Myanmar’s opium cultivation rose 56 percent from 2021 to 2023 to reach 45,200 hectares.

The report identified the Manipur corridor as the primary entry point for heroin and methamphetamine from Myanmar’s Shan State. Mizoram recorded 1,477 kilograms of amphetamine-type stimulants seized in 2025.

On the western border, 13,200 tonnes of pre-ban Afghan narcotics continue to reach India. Drone smuggling from Pakistan rose sharply, with 305 incidents and 468 kilograms seized in 2025.
