Former Education Minister Nadiem Anwar Makarim was sentenced to 10 years in prison, a Rp1 billion fine and Rp809.5 billion in restitution by the Jakarta Corruption Court on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
The panel of judges found Nadiem guilty of jointly committing corruption in the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management at the Education Ministry for the 2019-2022 period. Four of the five judges agreed with the verdict, while one judge issued a dissenting opinion and argued the defendant should be acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
Nadiem cried outside the courtroom and said the sentence was unreasonable because it ignored trial facts. He said his only hope now rests with the Indonesian public and vowed to keep fighting through appeal for his family and country.
The judges described the act as planned, structured and systematic, with wide impact on education in 3T regions. If Nadiem fails to pay the restitution within one month after the ruling becomes final, his assets will be seized and he will face an additional five-year prison term.
