Pocketpair has reflected on two years of its hit game Palworld, highlighting community support and challenges amid massive success. The studio released an anniversary video teasing new creatures ahead of the full version 1.0 launch in 2026. Executives emphasized transparency and player feedback as key to development.
Palworld launched in early access on January 19, 2024, for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC via Steam and Microsoft Store, quickly becoming a phenomenon. It became the second game to surpass two million concurrent players on Steam, following PUBG, and briefly outpaced Fortnite in US Xbox player numbers that month. Despite comparisons to 'Pokémon with guns' and criticism, the game built a large, active community.
On its second anniversary, January 19, 2026, Pocketpair's head of publishing and communications, John 'Bucky' Buckley, shared insights in an interview. "It's crazy thinking back to the initial release of Palworld, because it honestly feels like another lifetime ago," Buckley said. "We've been so blessed throughout this whole experience, and our fans continue to surprise us with their passion on a daily basis!"
Buckley stressed the value of transparency: "By far the most important thing I've learned over this time is how important it is to simply be transparent with our players." He noted that updates often stem from community feedback, as "Palworld is a game made by us, but it's also made by our players."
Challenges persist, including negativity from detractors. "Even we can get swept up in the negativity," Buckley admitted, referring to "contrarians who take every opportunity to snipe at it." Learning to focus on the positive community remains ongoing.
A new anniversary video featured thanks from CEO Takuro Mizobe, Buckley, and game director Woojin Kang. They credited player input for refining combat balancing, base-building, and multiplayer features. The video teased several unnamed new Pals with concept art and development tools, promising more wildlife for catching and base management in version 1.0.
Version 1.0 is slated for release in 2026 at the earliest, building on early access lessons. A PlayStation 5 version arrived on September 24, 2024. Pocketpair also announced a collaborative card game with Bushiroad for July 30, 2026, designed as a two-player competitive title.
