Secretary of State Marco Rubio will host representatives from more than 60 countries at a July 15 counterterrorism summit in Washington focused on transnational political extremism.
The gathering follows President Donald Trump’s counterterrorism strategy released earlier this year. It aims to improve intelligence sharing and law enforcement cooperation against violent far-left networks, including anarchist movements and Antifa-affiliated groups.
A State Department official said the meeting will update counterterrorism efforts to protect American citizens and U.S. interests. State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott described far-left political terrorism as an old threat re-emerging with strong transnational links.
The summit comes after the Justice Department last month sentenced members of a North Texas Antifa cell for a July 4, 2025, attack on the Prairieland ICE Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas. Prosecutors said the group used firearms, explosives and body armor in the incident.
Some European diplomats and terrorism experts have questioned the focus on far-left threats, arguing the scale is overstated in their countries. Others raised concerns about expanding counterterrorism authorities.
