The Solomon Islands will soon sign an agreement allowing US Coast Guard vessels to patrol its waters alongside local police, Prime Minister Matthew Wale announced during a visit to Washington.
Prime Minister Matthew Wale, who took office in May, made the announcement while strengthening bilateral ties with the United States. The South Pacific nation has maintained close security links with China, including a 2022 pact.
Wale met US Coast Guard Vice Commandant Admiral Thomas Allan on Monday. He also met Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau.
A US State Department readout said the two officials signed a Letter of Intent to return the Peace Corps to the Solomon Islands.
