Some schools still remain closed in Garden Route district

Some schools in South Africa's Garden Route district remain closed following recent floods and wind damage that have cut off several communities.

The Garden Route Disaster Management Centre reported ongoing closures in affected areas. Municipalities have made progress reopening roads across the region.

Disaster head Gerhard Otto said food hampers continue to be distributed to isolated spots. "Food hampers are being taken through to Avontuur and Kammenassie to be distributed to areas that is cut off where we can access areas," he stated.

Around a thousand people remain housed in halls while house assessments proceed. Officials plan to fly in supplies to unreachable zones on 13 May if weather permits, and residents may return home once sunny conditions arrive.
