South Carolina mother arrested after infant found dead

A 27-year-old woman in North Charleston, South Carolina, has been arrested on charges related to the death of her 11-month-old child in a filthy apartment.

Janette Clayton faces three counts of unlawful conduct toward a child, according to the North Charleston Police Department. Officers discovered the infant's body just before 1:30 p.m. on the 2200 block of Eleanor Drive after firefighters began lifesaving efforts.

A search of the residence found no food or child-care supplies and revealed a severe insect infestation throughout the unit, including in the refrigerator. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two department members were placed on leave after it emerged they had visited the apartment previously. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has been asked to review the initial response.

Clayton was detained at the Al Cannon Detention Center. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
