Tesla demonstrates Cybercab accessibility at blindness convention

Tesla brought its Cybercab robotaxi to the National Federation of the Blind Annual Convention in Austin, Texas, allowing blind and visually impaired attendees to experience its accessibility features firsthand.

The demonstration took place on July 3 at the JW Marriott Austin. Attendees, many using white canes or accompanied by service dogs, explored the vehicle, which lacks a steering wheel and pedals.

Key features include Braille lettering on physical controls such as door releases and emergency buttons. The design also provides dedicated space for service animals and assistive devices, along with wheelchair-height seating for easier transfers.

External microphones and speakers enable the vehicle to announce its arrival audibly and respond to verbal destination commands. Tesla highlighted these elements to support independent travel for users with visual impairments.

Tesla has released additional official documentation outlining safety features and operational guidelines for its Cybercab Robotaxi. The documents describe vehicle capabilities, emergency procedures, and limitations in various conditions. They confirm the vehicle is designed for SAE Level 4 autonomy in most scenarios.

Hundreds of Tesla Cybercab vehicles have been observed at Gigafactory Texas with new side decals, signaling potential entry into the company's ride-hailing fleet soon. The sightings follow the vehicle's recent receipt of an EPA Certificate of Conformity. Observers note the addition mirrors prior Model Y markings used during a similar launch about a year ago.
