Tokyo offers largest Tesla subsidies worldwide

Residents of Tokyo can now buy a new Tesla with the highest government incentives available globally. Tesla Japan announced that buyers qualify for up to 1.97 million yen in combined subsidies. The support stacks national and local programs to reduce the final purchase price significantly.

The incentives include a national Clean Energy Vehicle subsidy of 1.27 million yen. Tokyo adds a base Zero Emission Vehicle subsidy of 400,000 yen. Vehicles registered on or after July 1 receive an extra 300,000 yen top-up.

A standard Tesla Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive lists at 5,313,000 yen before incentives. After the full subsidy stack the out-of-pocket cost falls to 3,343,000 yen.

At current exchange rates this equals roughly 20,670 US dollars. The package establishes Tokyo as the lowest-cost major market for Tesla retail purchases.

Tesla is developing a new compact electric SUV priced below the $36,990 Model 3 and measuring 168 inches (4.3 meters) long—shorter than the Model 3 (185.8 inches) and Model Y (188.7 inches)—according to Reuters citing four anonymous supplier sources. The all-new design awaits CEO Elon Musk's production approval and may launch first in China before expanding to U.S. and German factories, signaling a pivot back to core vehicles after a focus on robotaxis and humanoid robots.

Tesla’s Model Y led foreign vehicle registrations in Japan for May 2026. The achievement marks a first for the brand in the import segment.
