Universidad de Chile holds elections for rector and student federation today

The Universidad de Chile is holding electronic elections on Tuesday, May 12, to choose its rector for 2026-2030 and the president of its student federation.

Four candidates are competing for the rector position: Francisco Martínez, dean of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences; Pablo Ruiz-Tagle, dean of the Faculty of Law; Alejandra Mizala, an academic from the same faculty; and Sergio Lavandero, an academic from the Faculty of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The electronic vote runs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and marks the first time such a system has been used at the university.

If no candidate secures over 50 percent of the weighted votes, a runoff will take place on Tuesday, June 2. The electoral roll comprises 4,222 academics.

In parallel, the election for the FECH student federation presidency concludes today. The lists “Conectemos la Chile,” led by Laura Mlynarz, and “Nuevo Horizonte,” headed by Ricardo Román, are seeking the post. The minimum quorum has already been reached, ensuring the federation will have an official president.
